USA MLS – Toronto FC v New York City FC Preview (18/5/16)

Toronto FC Preview

Both teams were involved in surprise results at the weekend. Everyone expected Toronto to easily beat Vancouver but they suffered a 3-4 reverse at home! TFC kicked off that match as a -1.25 asian handicap favourite, so that demonstrates how much of a shock their loss was. It’s difficult to explain what happened. The Canadian side have been renowned for having such a solid defence this season but they made so many poor errors. Perhaps being at home didn’t help them. Most of their fixtures have been on the road this year, so maybe adapting back to a home encounter gave them difficulties.

New York City FC Preview

Few people expected New York City to go and beat Portland at Providence Park, but that’s exactly what they did! NYC had to ride out a massive storm in the first half but managed to score two excellent goals to see them over the line. Patrick Vieira’s men went through an extremely sticky patch but have since won three matches in a row. This will be their third road game in a week which isn’t ideal, but the team should be confident and believe it can get the job done away from home. When you have guys like David Villa and Andrea Pirlo in your ranks then respect is always commanded. Villa was once again clinical at the weekend and some of Pirlo’s passing was absolutely delicious.

Conclusion & Betting analysis

Toronto FC miss striker Jozy Altidore, but this might not be a bad thing. His form this season hasn’t been great and ‘Dozy’ was disappointing before injuring himself at the weekend, missing a penalty in the process. NYCFC have few injury concerns and no fresh worries. Toronto have been a strong under team this season but perhaps moving back home will open them up more. That certainly seemed to be the case at the weekend anyway. Many will see this match as Sebastian Giovinco vs David Villa, and in many ways that’s correct. These are the two best players in MLS and it’s difficult to see either lacking for motivation tonight. I think goals are likely and over 2.75 looks like a good bet. I don’t see it being a tight encounter and there’s too much quality at both ends of the field for there not to be at least three goals. For those who prefer a better better odds then over 3.0 @ over evens is fine to take as well.

Prediction: 2-2
Recommended bet: Over 2.75 goals @ 1.78

USA MLS – New York Red Bulls v Chicago Fire Preview (18/5/16)

New York Red Bulls Preview

The Red Bulls had strung together a few good performances and results, therefore it was a surprise when they produced such a dismal display away at DC United on Friday night (0-2). It felt like a lifeless lethargic outing and they were clear second best. But The Red Bulls have played woefully on the road all season so to some people it wasn’t the greatest surprise. Here at home they are usually much better and this looks like a nice ‘rebound’ sort of fixture facing the Fire. At Red Bull Arena, the Bulls have won 3 of their last 4, and facing such a poor road side, most fans will expect them to dominate. It doesn’t look like the hosts have any new injury concerns ahead of the game.

Chicago Fire Preview

The MLS is a very competitive league and literally every team has a chance of making the playoffs this season. The one exception appears to be Chicago who are already struggling adrift at the bottom of the Eastern Conference. This is going to be their third away game in the space of seven days and this is terrible news for them. The Fire have now gone a whopping 29 (!!!) MLS matches without an away win and it’d be a huge shock if they ended that run tonight. On Saturday they were easily outplayed by New England and this will be an even tougher challenge. At least key weapon David Accam is now back from injury, although it’s obvious he isn’t in peak physical condition.

Conclusion & Betting analysis

This looks set to be an easy home win. The Red Bulls are in a false league position and are sure to improve in future months. This is a must win game for them, anything other than three points facing Chicago would be classed as a major failure. They were so impressive here against Dallas in their last home game, that even a performance only half as good would be enough to easily beat the visitors tonight. The gulf in class is too much and I think we’re looking at a blowout home win. Taking NYRB on a -1 asian handicap looks sensible. At very worst they should win by one goal, but logically they should get two or three, perhaps even more. I thought about backing over 2.75 or over 3 goals here as well. But truth be told I just don’t think Chicago will score. So I’ll just stick with the simpler handicap bet.

Prediction: 3-0
Recommended bet: New York Red Bulls -1 (asian) @ 1.83

Norway Tippeligaen – Stromsgodset v Sarpsborg Preview (16/5/16)

Stromsgodset Preview

SIF were on a good run of results but defeat at Molde last time out ended all that. They were 0-3 down in the blink of an eye and never recovered, eventually losing 2-4. Godset have generally been playing quite well though and they look about the 4th or 5th best side in the Tippeligaen. Their performance against Lillestrom in their last home game was impressive, winning 3-1 facing Continue reading

Norway Tippeligaen – Viking v Sogndal Preview (16/5/16)

Viking Preview

Inconsistency has plagued the Stavanger outfit this season. Five wins, one draw, and four losses demonstrate they are often good or bad, with nothing in between. Last time out they won’t know how they lost, or at least didn’t score a goal against Stabaek (0-1). It was a match in which Viking had a number of really big chances but failed to take any! This rather sums them up this season and they’ve yet to properly Continue reading

Norway Tippeligaen – Valerenga v Haugesund Preview (16/5/16)

Valerenga Preview

‘Enga haven’t had a great season but have at least managed to win their last three consecutive home games. Things certainly haven’t been rosy in their garden but improved displays in front of their own fans is sure to improve confidence. Key man upfront Deshorn Brown has finally found his scoring boots and that’s an encouraging Continue reading

Norway Tippeligaen – Odd v Molde Preview (16/5/16)

Odd Preview

Defeats against Lillestrom & Haugesund (both 1-3) are the reason why Odd are down to third in the league, five points off Rosenborg. For the majority of the campaign they’ve looked quite a solid outfit, maybe even a title challenger but dropping points in those aforementioned matches could be costly. Key midfielder Jone Samuelsen probably won’t play this match which would be a severe blow. Fellow man in the middle Continue reading
