Norway Tippeligaen – Molde v Start Preview (17/7/16)

Molde preview

The champions of two years ago are in the middle of a poor run, losing 4 of their last 5 games. They’ve come back from the summer break with two really disappointing defeats, especially the awful 4-3 defeat at Sogndal last week. The final scoreline didn’t tell the full story in a match which Molde were clearly second best in, Something like 4-1 or 5-1 would’ve been a fairer reflection on proceedings. Of course, MFK haven’t been helped by the loss of Fredrik Gulbrandsen & Mo Elyounoussi who have transferred out of the club. A massive hole in their attack has been generated by these dealings. Molde still have decent quality in their squad and are boosted by the return of Eidur Gudjohnsen here. But all isn’t well with them at the moment and I sense a downbeat atmosphere.

Start preview

The wait goes on for Start. It’s now well over a year and 30 Tippeligaen matches since they last won a match in this division. Yet due to the poor performances of some other teams like Valerenga, Aalesund & Stabaek Start still have somewhat of a sniff of survival. Obviously they need to start winning matches but if they could grab something here to keep the scoreboard ticking over then it’d be useful. Their recent away performances haven’t been too bad and it’s been a while since someone really battered them on the road. I’d expect they make themselves hard to break down here and try to frustrate. A lot depends how much they truly believe. When a team is in the middle of such a bad run then it’s easy to let their heads get down. A trip to Molde should inspire the players at least and they’d love to pull off an upset here.

Conclusion & Betting analysis

Neither team convinces me at the moment. Molde look a shadow of what they once were and will be relieved to be playing such an easy fixture on paper. They should still have too much for Start but at the moment I wouldn’t trust them with my money. The asian handicap is between -1.5 and -1.75. The way Start collapse late in games then of course it’s possible Molde could run riot in the end, but I have a feeling Start might stay competitive for longer than most expect them to. Nothing interests me betting wise in this match. The goal line is 3.25 which seems a little high – you might need Molde to score all four goals for this to cover. I think something like Molde 2-0 is possible but I’m not really sure. It will soon become apparent early on how competitive Start will be and if they can surprise or not.

Prediction: 2-0
Recommended bet: None
