Columbus Crew v DC United
The Crew could only draw 1-1 in midweek against a depleted Toronto outfit. All season long they’ve flattered to deceive and nothing is right with them. Tonight, they’ll come up against a DC United team who will aim to frustrate them with a solid defence. The first goal is absolutely crucial in DCU games. If the visitors get it, Columbus are in massive trouble because United are so strong at holding onto leads. But if the Crew can get ahead it’s often a death sentence for the Capital club to fall behind. With DCU not playing in midweek they should have a fitness advantage and I’ll give them the edge, but I don’t say this with much confidence.
Colorado Rapids v Sporting Kansas City
Rapids games aren’t usually very exciting. Their 2-2 with Vancouver last time out was a rare exception when goalscoring took off. Here at home they are usually so hard to penetrate and concede very few goals. Colorado have also had a week off so should be well rested and fresh for the encounter. SKC were frustrated in midweek when they lost to Chicago Fire, despite dominating. I have noticed an improvement in their form recently, but travelling to altitude after that fixture is hardly ideal. I think 1-0 or 2-0 is the most likely outcome, but the odds are too short on the hosts. SKC have looked better of late so there’s a chance they might cause the a few problems to their opponents.
San Jose Earthquakes v Toronto FC
I think this has all the hallmarks of a low scoring match. San Jose don’t head into the contest with much confidence, winless in seven matches. Not many of their games tend to be very exciting, especially here at home where they can be difficult to penetrate. They’ll have their hands full dealing with a well rested Sebastian Giovinco here but the Italian has been struggling in recent week, failing to score in his last seven matches. Jozy Altidore might return for the visitors as well following injury. Both teams have solid defences and even a 0-0 might be on the cards. Maybe Giovinco will deliver one classy moment though and San Jose reply to it. So I’ll say a 1-1 draw, but this could end anything.
