USA MLS – Other matches brief thoughts (16/7/16)

Columbus Crew v DC United

The Crew could only draw 1-1 in midweek against a depleted Toronto outfit. All season long they’ve flattered to deceive and nothing is right with them. Tonight, they’ll come up against a DC United team who will aim to frustrate them with a solid defence. The first goal is absolutely crucial in DCU games. If the visitors get it, Columbus are in massive trouble because United are so strong at holding onto leads. But if the Crew can get Continue reading

USA MLS – FC Dallas v Chicago Fire Preview (16/7/16)

DAL-CF

FC Dallas preview

The Texans have had an excellent season but suffered a horrible 0-5 loss at Seattle in midweek. In some ways this isn’t a surprise though. Dallas rested most of their entire XI, either to the bench or completely out of the game. This has been done on a few occasions this season and they’ve actually suffered a few humbling away losses in this fashion. So I personally wouldn’t look too much into it, Dallas remain one of the best sides in MLS and the opinion of some people is that Continue reading

USA MLS – Vancouver Whitecaps v Orlando City Preview (16/7/16)

VW-OC

Vancouver preview

The Whitecaps managed to grind out a 2-0 win against RSL in midweek. They weren’t particularly brilliant but showed some good defensive resilience against one of the better teams in MLS, getting the job done. Sometimes the Vancouver backline has been dodgy this year so it will come as a relief to coach Carl Robinson that a rare clean sheet was obtained. Of course, part of that reason was down to goalkeeper David Ousted who continues to be one of the best Continue reading

USA MLS – Real Salt Lake v New England Revolution Preview (16//7/16)

RSL-NE

Real Salt Lake preview

RSL head into this match winless in four games which is their worst run of the season. In midweek they lost 0-2 at Vancouver but fielded a weaker side and rested players. There are a couple of injury doubts here, the most notable to Joao Plata, but certain guys will be more fresh after sitting out that midweek fixture. The Utah side have generally had a really good season and this is their first real sticky patch. Nevertheless, performances have still been Continue reading

USA MLS – LA Galaxy v Houston Dynamo Preview (15/7/16)

LAX-HD

LA Galaxy preview

The Galaxy had their usual mid season slump but it looks like they might be over that now. Back to back hard fought wins against Vancouver & Seattle have gotten Bruce Arena’s men back on track. Of course, things have been helped by the return to fitness of key players like Robbie Keane. LA also missed guys like Gyasi Zardes to the Copa America. For this affair, both of their left back options Robbie Rogers & Ashley Cole are injured. So they’ll be weak Continue reading

USA MLS – Other matches brief thoughts (13/7/16)

OTHER MLS 2

New York Red Bulls v Orlando

Tough one here. The bookies have NYRB on a -1.25 handicap and the goal line is between 3 and 3.25. In recent weeks New York have looked really poor, especially in offensive areas where they seem to be lacking ideas and penetration. The trade of Lloyd Sam to DC United has hardly helped matters. Orlando have had two extra days of rest compared to their opponents here, which could be crucial. Continue reading

USA MLS – Chicago Fire v Sporting Kansas City Preview (13/7/16)

CF-SKC

Chicago Fire preview

The Fire suffered yet more away misery as they lost 0-1 at Toronto on Saturday night. It’s now been 33 games and over two years since they last tasted victory on the road. Once again though, they weren’t too bad and remained competitive for most of the contest. Chicago have only lost one match by more than a single goal margin this season and have been harder to beat. Scoring goals has been a major issue but the Fire hope that new signing Michael De Leeuw can help them out in that department. He arrived from Dutch club Groningen and had a pretty good record Continue reading
